How to Get to Our Bed and Breakfast in New Orleans

From the Airport

Taxi

Taxi service from the airport to our bed and breakfast in New Orleans and almost any destination in the city costs $36 for 1-2 persons or $15 per head for 3 or more. Taxis are abundant outside of the baggage claim area on the ground floor of the airport. Be sure to give the taxi driver the address of the property and not just the name of the B&B, as there are several hotels and inns about town with “Whitney” in their name.

If you don’t wish to wait in the taxi queue for the next available cab, you may telephone United Cab at 504-522-9771 when you are in the baggage claim area and request a curbside pickup. United is our recommended taxi service and we will provide you with their number again once you arrive at the inn. You can also download a free app from the Google Play Store which will allow you to order a taxi directly from your smartphone. Search for “United Cabs New Orleans” in the app play store.

Uber & Lyft

Uber and Lyft ride sharing services have become ubiquitous throughout the world. However, not every locale has approved these services, especially where airport passenger pick-ups are concerned. At Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY), Uber and UberX are allowed to pick-up passengers, but not Lyft. If you use these services, please consult with them for more information.

Limousine

Limousine service is a great way to go and can offer competitive rates if 3 or more of you are traveling together. One-way limo service to and from the airport starts at $65. If you want to arrive in style, please contact Extreme Elegance Limousine at 1-866-799-LIMO (5466). Be sure to tell them that we referred you and you will enjoy a luxurious ride to our bed and breakfast in New Orleans.

Airport Shuttle

Unfortunately, we cannot recommend Airport Shuttle, which actually costs MORE than a taxi ride when two or more people are travelling together. Whereas a taxi driver will deliver you directly to our doorstep within 20-40 minutes, depending upon traffic conditions, Airport shuttle takes longer – up to 2 hours – and does NOT deliver directly to our doorstep unless you bribe the driver with a healthy “tip” to get him to “go out of his way”.

The reality is that the Airport Shuttle bus does service our area, but made the business decision a few years back to not service any entity that could not guarantee them at least 100 bookings annually. This includes our bed and breakfast in New Orleans. Unsuspecting guests have been dropped off several blocks away while the shuttle bus zooms up the Esplanade past our location to reach more profitable venues.

Our recommendation is to save yourself the aggravation and hail a taxi from the airport. Most taxi drivers are the city’s front line ambassadors and will even stop along the way for you if you need to run into a drugstore for something! Or hit the drive-thru daiquiri shop!

Rental Car

Should you decide to put yourselves in the driver’s seat, please follow the appropriate directions below. While online mapping tools like MAPQUEST and GOOGLE MAPS are good for pinpointing a location, please use our directions which are much simpler and will keep you from getting lost. We are just three blocks north of Interstate 10. Exit and entrance ramps are very close by.

When leaving the airport, follow the signs to the Airport Access Road and Interstate 10. Pay close attention to the signage because you may have to cross over several lanes of traffic in a short space to take the proper exits. Speed limit on the access road is 45 MPH and is sometimes heavily patrolled. At the end of the access road, stay in your left lane and take the up-ramp to I-10 East. Follow the directions labeled “. . . From the West – via Kenner and Metairie …” below.

From the Road

From the West – via Kenner and Metairie – Interstates I-55 South and/or & I-10 East

Drive into New Orleans on Interstate 10 East through Kenner and Metairie. Remain on I-10 East heading into town — DO NOT take the I-610 exit at the Jefferson-Orleans Parish line. Continue on I-10 East past the Metairie Road/City Park Avenue and Carrollton Avenue exits. While you are on the Carrollton interchange overpass, get into your right-hand lane if you are not already there.

As you approach the Superdome and downtown area, stay in either of the two right hand lanes and continue on I-10 East towards Slidell. DO NOT take the US 90 Business Route/Mississippi River Bridge approach. (If you are in one of the three left-hand lanes, this is exactly what you’ll be doing!) The Superdome should be on your RIGHT as you pass by it. If the Superdome is on your left, then you are no longer on I-10, but US 90 Business. Get off at the next available exit and call us for additional directions.

Otherwise, continue on I-10 East past the Poydras Street/Superdome and Orleans Avenue/Vieux Carré exits until you get to exit 236-A at Esplanade Avenue.

Take exit 236-A (speed limit on ramp is 25 MPH due to a sharp curve). When you reach the bottom of the ramp, use caution and crossover two lanes of traffic to the left lane. Turn left at the first traffic signal (Esplanade Avenue) and cross under the interstate. Please be aware that in New Orleans, street signs are often missing. Esplanade is at the first traffic light off the 236-A exit.

When the signal changes, proceed three full blocks. The HH Whitney House Bed and Breakfast in New Orleans is located in the fourth block on the right at 1923 Esplanade. You may notice that there is a large banner sign on the front fence with our name on it!

From the East – via Slidell and New Orleans East- Interstates I-59 South and/or & I-10 West

Drive into New Orleans on Interstate 10 West. From Slidell, cross over the Lake Pontchartrain twin spans and continue through New Orleans East over the high-rise bridge at the Industrial Canal. Remain on I-10 West heading into town — DO NOT take the I-610 exit. Continue on I-10 West past the Elysian Fields Avenue exit until you get to exit 236-C at St. Bernard Avenue

Take exit 236-C and turn left at the bottom of the ramp onto St. Bernard Avenue. Almost immediately, veer to the right prior to the I-10 overpass in order to turn onto N. Claiborne Avenue, which runs at ground level along the side of the interstate.

Proceed on N. Claiborne (approximately four blocks) to the next traffic signal (Esplanade Avenue) and turn right. Remember that street signs in New Orleans are often missing, but you’ll know that you’re at Esplanade Avenue when you see the purple cinder-block Manchu Food Store on the corner. After turning onto Esplanade Avenue, proceed three full blocks. The HH Whitney House Bed and Breakfast in New Orleans is located in the fourth block on the right at 1923 Esplanade. You may notice that there is a large banner sign on the front fence with our name on it!

From the SouthWest – via New Orleans Westbank – Interstates I-49 South and/or & US 90 Business

Driving from Lafayette, Houma and Thibodeaux areas, you may choose to approach the New Orleans area on Interstate 49 South/US 90 East. Take the US 90 Business Route as you approach Avondale and Westwego and remain on the ground level Westbank Expressway until you reach Marrero where you may enter the elevated expressway. Remain on the elevated portion through Harvey and Gretna and onto the Crescent City Connection bridge across the Mississippi River.

After you cross the river, continue on the elevated expressway to the I-10 East exit towards Slidell. You will pass the Superdome and New Orleans Arena just prior to the exit and pass the Superdome a second time as you round the corner out of the exit. Continue on I-10 East past the Orleans Avenue/Vieux Carré exit. The second exit you encounter will be exit 236-A at Esplanade Avenue.

Free Parking

Driveway/Carriageway

You may park on the avenue in front of the house or you may pull into the driveway. A word of caution, however, when pulling into the driveway: The gate and drive were designed for horse and carriage and are extremely narrow. It helps to swing wide from the avenue into the driveway, but please be cautious of other vehicles and/or bicycle traffic in the dedicated bike lane. If you feel uncomfortable pulling into the carriageway, please park on the street and upon request, we will be happy to valet park your vehicle.

Once in the driveway, we ask that you pull your vehicle as far up as possible – all the way to the fence, if possible. If there are other vehicles in the driveway, please pull as close to the vehicle in front of you as possible. The single driveway opens to a double strip past the home’s Solarium alcove. Please park your vehicle on whichever side of the driveway has more space available.

Once inside, we ask that anyone who has parked in the driveway to hang their car keys on a key rack just inside the front door. We do this so that we can quickly and easily move any cars that may be in the way of someone else trying to get out.

On-Street

If you plan on using your car to travel in and out several times during your stay, or if you are unable to observe the parking guidelines above, we ask that you simply park your vehicle on the street in front of the house. Street parking is unrestricted and readily available on the entire block. Just be sure that you don’t block a driveway or access to a fire hydrant.

Arrival

During the Day

Please remember to keep us informed regarding your estimated arrival time. Although we reside on premises, our bed and breakfast in New Orleans is not staffed 24/7. By keeping us advised of your plans, you can assure that someone will be available to greet you when you arrive. We thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor.

After Hours

If you are arriving at a late-hour (or on an occasion when we are unable to be home when you are scheduled to arrive), it may be necessary to leave a lockbox with a key inside that will allow you to gain access to the B&B. We prefer to arrange this ahead of time, but in the event that is not possible, the combination to the lockbox is normally set to the 3-digit area code of the phone number you provided to us when you made your reservation. In the event that your area code is not 3 UNIQUE digits, we will try to come up with some other combination of numbers that will be easily recognizable to you. Please feel free to telephone us if you have any difficulty following our directions.
